Kona is the only place in the United States where coffee has been grown commericially for over one hundred years. The rich volcanic soil, moderate temperatures, and afternoon showers create the optimum growing conditions for producing the world's best coffee. With only 1,800 acres of coffee farms, Kona coffee is still handpicked and roasted in the tradition of generations of coffee plantation growers. In 1866 Mark Twain stated, in his "Letters from Hawaii", "Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other, be it grown where it may and call it by what name you please."
There are over 5,000 acres of coffee plantations on Kauai, Molokai, Maui and Oahu, with more to come as sugar cane and pineapple fields are replaced by coffee throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
